Ethiopian Airlines takes a stake of 45 percent in the Re-launch of Zambia Airways , that had ceased it's operation in the year 1994, and could not take off since then due to multiple factors.
Efforts were being made from last three years , in which Ethiopian Airlines, in conjunction with the Zambian Government , reached an agreement to re-establish the airline on the Zambian Day of Independence, 24 October 2018. But , in August 2018, all parties involved deferred the launch date of the airline to 1 January 2019.
On 20 August 2018, Ethiopian Airlines had signed a definitive agreement with the Zambian Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), to acquire 45 percent shareholding in the revived air carrier for US$30 million.
The plan was framed to start the flights with local and regional routes using Turboprop aircraft, and to expand the intercontinental routes later . The relaunched carrier plans to operate 12 planes by 2028.
However, in the early 2019 , the relaunch was delayed a second time as the airline's new board of directors had not met, pushing the project indefinitely .
On 8 August 2019 the government of Zambia delayed the relaunch of the airline again after Zambia's Centre for Trade Policy and Development (CTPD) intervened, stating that the airline should not be relaunched until Zambia was in a better economical state.
Touchdown KKIA! A big welcome to @zambia_airways. The airline will begin operations on Wednesday the 1st of December 2021.
