When will Peruvian Jauja Francisco Carle Airport reopen its Operations ?

  • These maintenance works are essential to restoring the Francisco Carlé Airport to operational service.
  • The maintenance work includes the removal of the existing asphalt surface, the installation of a stabilized base, which ensures the runway's uniformity and strength,
  • Runway maintenance also includes the application of a hot-mixed asphalt surface, which offers greater durability and adaptability to weather conditions and the airport's operational needs.
  • On the aircraft apron, work is also underway to construct high-strength concrete slabs in the parking areas to enhance the safety and efficiency of air operations.
  • Completion of maintenance work will allow for the resumption of commercial flights between Lima and Jauja.
  • This will strengthen air connectivity in the central region of the country and contribute to the development of the national airport system.

The Peruvian Airports and Commercial Aviation Corporation (Corpac SA) reported that maintenance work at Francisco Carlé Airport in Jauja has been progressing steadily, reaching 52.6% completion to date, thanks to the coordinated efforts of the contractor, technical supervision, and the commitment of the Corpac team.

" In order to meet established deadlines and ensure the quality of the interventions, the night shift has been incorporated, which increases productivity and ensures the continuous development of ongoing activities," Corpac stated in a statement.

In March this year, Santiago based Chilean carrier SKY has announced the indefinite closure of operations at Jauja Francisco Carle Airport, (JAU) of Peru due to the persistently poor condition of the runway, which put the safety of passengers and crew at risk.

The regional director of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Junín, Julio Humberto Abanto Llaque, announced that the airport would reopen in the first week of June, benefiting more than 180,000 residents of the Mantaro Valley.

He explained that the work includes the removal of the existing asphalt surface, the installation of a stabilized base, which ensures the runway's uniformity and strength, and the application of a hot-modified asphalt surface, which offers greater durability and adaptability to weather conditions and the airport's operational needs.

Commercial Aviation Corporation documents stated that:

" On the aircraft platform, work is also underway to construct high-strength concrete slabs in the parking areas to enhance the safety and efficiency of air operations ," the document states.

“Corpac reaffirms its commitment to operational safety and the quality of airport infrastructure, emphasizing that all these efforts are carried out under the inspection and monitoring of the Comptroller General of the Republic and with close citizen oversight. This ensures transparency, accountability, and proper management of public resources, with a view to strengthening air connectivity and contributing to the development of the region ,” the statement concludes.

Major work on progress in the Airport

  • On the Runway, the asphalt layer in the middle third has been completely removed. A 15-centimeter-thick stabilized base is being laid in preparation for the application of a new 4-inch layer of hot-mixed asphalt. This work covers 2,700 linear meters.
  • On the aircraft apron, the existing asphalt surface has been removed. A high-strength concrete slab is being laid in the two aircraft parking areas. This will allow for safe and efficient passenger disembarkation.
  • In the aircraft turnaround area , the asphalt layer has also been removed. A 20-centimeter-thick stabilized base is planned, followed by a 4-inch layer of polymer-modified asphalt. This procedure aims to ensure the structural strength of this critical area for air operations.

Abanto Llaque also highlighted that three airlines are in talks to resume commercial operations from Jauja Airport, which could generate a significant boost for tourism and the region's economy. "We are working hard to ensure the air connectivity that Junín so desperately needs," the official stated.

The resumption of commercial flights would not only ease the load on Lima's airport but would also help relieve congestion on land routes to the center of the country, providing greater safety and efficiency for passengers.
