The Peruvian Airports and Commercial Aviation Corporation (Corpac SA) reported that maintenance work at Francisco Carlé Airport in Jauja has been progressing steadily, reaching 52.6% completion to date, thanks to the coordinated efforts of the contractor, technical supervision, and the commitment of the Corpac team.
" In order to meet established deadlines and ensure the quality of the interventions, the night shift has been incorporated, which increases productivity and ensures the continuous development of ongoing activities," Corpac stated in a statement.
In March this year, Santiago based Chilean carrier SKY has announced the indefinite closure of operations at Jauja Francisco Carle Airport, (JAU) of Peru due to the persistently poor condition of the runway, which put the safety of passengers and crew at risk.
The regional director of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Junín, Julio Humberto Abanto Llaque, announced that the airport would reopen in the first week of June, benefiting more than 180,000 residents of the Mantaro Valley.
He explained that the work includes the removal of the existing asphalt surface, the installation of a stabilized base, which ensures the runway's uniformity and strength, and the application of a hot-modified asphalt surface, which offers greater durability and adaptability to weather conditions and the airport's operational needs.
Commercial Aviation Corporation documents stated that:
" On the aircraft platform, work is also underway to construct high-strength concrete slabs in the parking areas to enhance the safety and efficiency of air operations ," the document states.
“Corpac reaffirms its commitment to operational safety and the quality of airport infrastructure, emphasizing that all these efforts are carried out under the inspection and monitoring of the Comptroller General of the Republic and with close citizen oversight. This ensures transparency, accountability, and proper management of public resources, with a view to strengthening air connectivity and contributing to the development of the region ,” the statement concludes.
Major work on progress in the Airport
Abanto Llaque also highlighted that three airlines are in talks to resume commercial operations from Jauja Airport, which could generate a significant boost for tourism and the region's economy. "We are working hard to ensure the air connectivity that Junín so desperately needs," the official stated.
The resumption of commercial flights would not only ease the load on Lima's airport but would also help relieve congestion on land routes to the center of the country, providing greater safety and efficiency for passengers.
