The U.S. company Lockheed Martin has completed the sale of a C-130J-30 Super Hercules aircraft to the Mexican Air Force (FAM), making Mexico the first country in Latin America to operate this advanced version of the emblematic Hercules, as announced through an official statement.
This strategic move represents not only a modernization of equipment, but the consolidation of Mexico as the regional leader in heavy tactical transport, joining a global elite of only 25 nations that operate the most advanced variant of the legendary Hercules.
The contract was officially announced on January 21, 2026, from the company's plant in Marietta, Georgia, marking a new step in the renewal of the country's air capabilities as this acquisition is the first of two international awards closed in 2025.
By choosing the C-130J-30, Mexico accesses a platform with state-of-the-art digital avionics, greater fuel efficiency and an extended cargo capacity, as this elongated version adds 4.5 meters of space in the cargo hold.
Many experts in the defense sector wonder what advantages the C-130J-30 has over older models; The technical answer provided by the manufacturer lies in its superior power, its ability to operate on short or unprepared runways, and a range that allows transcontinental missions without technical stopovers.
The Mexican Air Force's decision to recapitalize its legacy fleet builds on five decades of impeccable performance of the original C-130 model in the country.
According to Trish Pagan, vice president of Air Mobility & Maritime Missions at Lockheed Martin, this purchase ratifies absolute confidence in the Super Hercules. Pagan stressed that the aircraft will offer unmatched performance and versatility necessary for the critical missions that Mexico faces annually, especially under the scheme of the DN-III-E Plan.
Trish Pagan, said:
"This historic decision by Mexico reflects the continued trust placed in the C-130J Super Hercules by operators around the world." He added: "With its new C-130J-30, the Mexican Air Force will have an unmatched tactical transport capacity, exceptional reliability, and the versatility necessary to execute the model's 20 certified missions, both in Mexico and regionally and internationally."
At the regional level, the question arises as to which countries operate the C-130 in Latin America; although nations such as Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Colombia have previous versions (K or H), Mexico distances itself competitively by being the only one with "J" technology.
The arrival of the C-130J-30 Super Hercules marks a new stage in the modernization of its tactical transport aviation, strengthening the country's capabilities to face critical missions and expand its regional projection.
The C-130J Super Hercules, with a global fleet of more than 560 aircraft in operation, helps FAM ensuring its sustained preparation and access to a global business support network, also reinforcing the Super Hercules as the backbone of Mexican air mobility.
