The Swedish government is closing down it's third busiest Bromma Airport (BMA/ESSB) in Stockholm and the freed up land will be used for housing , given its close proximity to the city.
The availability of housing in Stockholm has long been an issue and the closure of the airport should make more than 400 acres of land available for residential development.
Closure in not a sudden decision, there are many factors involved to this , one of the factors is the trend of flygskam (flight shaming) !
The trend of flygskam (flight shaming) influenced by environmental activist Greta Thunberg was factored for approx. 4% to 5% traffic drop in 2019 . Many Swedes travellers switched over to long distance trains instead.
Discussions over 1936 inaugurated Bromma's future have been ongoing for years. economical viability of the airport is always being questioned , specifically when world air travel industry is going through a bad phase.
However, closure of Bromma will not wipe out the Swedish air travel completely. Sweden plans to expand capacity at Arlanda, that includes a potential new runway.
Bromma was Sweden's domestic flyers' favourite, which is being taken over by long distance trains to some extent now.
But for air travels, Stockholm will depend on the much larger Arlanda airport, that accomodates the international flights to the Swedish capital and many other domestic flights.
Swedish royal family had opened the Bromma Airport in 1936 and it served as the city’s main airport for around 25 years.
With rise of Arlanda to handle larger jet aircrafts, Bromma has lost the economical viability, but still remains the favourite among domestic and general aviation travellers due to its location.
