

In a tragic development, an Airport ground handling staff at Charlotte Douglas International Airport tragically lost his life in an incident involving an airline ramp vehicle Monday morning, the airport confirms.
Emergency and medical crews responded to a single-vehicle accident at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. CMPD was dispatched to a call about an employee struck by a vehicle on the tarmac.
The ground incident happened around 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 27. Officials did not say what led up to the crash but did state that only one vehicle was involved.
Some unofficial sources say that the American Airlines ground handling staff was struck by a reversing aircraft tow truck on the Apron.
Although Emergency and medical crews reached the incident site quickly, the person could not be saved. The name of the person killed was not released. Charlotte Douglas International Airport authorities said that they are working closely with airline and first responders in the investigation.
Charlotte Douglas International Airport released a statement, saying:
“Our deepest condolences go out to the employee’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time. The Airport is working closely with airline and first responder partners in the ongoing investigation and is providing support as needed. Airport chaplains are available onsite.”
American Airlines confirmed that the worker who died was one of their employees:
We are devastated by the accident involving a team member at Charlotte International Airport (CLT). Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and our local team members. We are focused on ensuring that all involved have the support they need during this difficult time.
The N.C. Department of Labor says they are aware of the death and are sending an officer to do an inspection.
Even though some delays were registered to weather conditions, the ground incident didn't affect the flights, FAA lists no substantial flight delays for planes arriving or departing Charlotte.
