47th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, has announced that U.S.A. has awarded Boeing Contract for its Sixth-Generation Fighter jet, designated as the F-47, under the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program.
In the surprising revelation on March 21, 2025, the United States awarded aerospace giant Boeing, the much awaited and a lucrative contract to develop the sixth-generation fighter jet F-47, aimed to replace the F-22 Raptors by 2030.
The President Trump said,
"Boeing was selected as the contractor of the Air Force's next-generation fighter = F-47" "F-47 will be something that no one has ever seen" "There is nothing comparable to F-47 in all characteristics such as speed, maneuverability, payload, etc."
The announcement, made during a press conference at the White house, included a surprise disclosure that an experimental version of the advanced fighter has been under development for the past five years.
Sources quote, the F-47 is in fact, named after Trump, the 47th president of the U.S.A.The president declared “The generals picked a title, but did not announce a nickname for the warplane.
Interestingly, the announcement of F-47 contract awad makes its way just after the news in media of a Delta shaped Chinese Jet, Chengdu J-36, doing its flight tests, claimed to be a Sixth - Generation fighter jet, an adversary to the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program.
Reportedly, the sixth-generation F-47 will have following characteristics:
Boeing has kept the details secret, but insiders say the fighter was developed to outperform the F-22 and F-35 by one generation and give it a complete advantage in future air battles.
The F-47 will be the first U.S. fighter jet to come equipped with a “loyal wingman” system, where it will operate alongside autonomous drones that assist in reconnaissance, electronic warfare, and combat missions.
Summarizing the information revealed by Chief of Staff Alvin during and after the press conference,
"The F-47 (design) is unprecedented in about 5 years of flight tests by prototypes," "Therefore, (mass-produced aircraft) can make its first flight by January 2029,"
"The cost of the F-47 is cheaper than the F-22," "The number of F-47s procured (unofficial number is 220 ~ 250 aircraft) will be higher than the F-22,"
" The F-47 will have a significantly longer range than the current fifth-generation aircraft, improved stealth, and will be more sustainable, supportive, and available,"
"the F-47 will adapt to its design concept," and "(compared to the fifth-generation aircraft) will require significantly fewer personnel and infrastructure to operate."
The supersonic stealth fighter jet Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, introduced in the early 2000s, has been a dominant force in aerial combat till date. However, with rising maintenance costs and out dated technology with reference to current warfare developments, the U.S. A.F. needed a modern replacement, that's announced as the F-47.
For the bombers, it's to be noted that after unveiling the new Northrop Grumman’s B-21 Raider in December 2022, the U.S. Air Force has been witnessing remarkable improvements to the Raider program as the B-21 Raider strategic bomber already completed its first flight at Edwards Air Force Base in November 2023.

Traditionally, Lockheed Martin has been the dominat player in the U.S. fighter jet domain, that produced iconic F-22 Raptor and the F-35 Lightning II jets. However, with this F-47 contract to Boeing, U.S.A. is adopting a major shift in military procurement, demonstrating confidence in Boeing’s capabilities.
Boeing’s successful contract bid is a major financial boost for the company, especially following recent challenges in commercial aviation.
The mass production of the Boeing F-47 Fighter Jet program is also expected to generate thousands of high-skilled jobs across the U.S., that will benefit the aerospace industry while boosting local economies.
