Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev: Azerbaijan Airlines plane crash could have been avoided; we demand punishment of the guilty.

  • Azerbaijan demands punishment for those to blame for the crash of the of the AZAL plane, which was en route from Baku to Grozny and crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan.
  • The flight recorders (Black Box) from the plane are now being decoded, as per Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
  • Aliyev emphasized that the crash could have been avoided if there had been proper coordination between Russia's military and civil services.
  • He emphasized that Azerbaijan “will demand justice and the punishment of those responsible for the deaths of Azerbaijani citizens in this disaster.”
  • An Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) Embraer 190, en route from Baku to Grozny, crashed near Aktau on December 25, killing 38 people.
  • It was carrying 67 people, including five crewmembers. Of that number, 42 were citizens of Azerbaijan, 16 of Russia, six of Kazakhstan, and three of Kyrgyzstan.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has again demanded punishment of those guilty in Russia for the shoot-down of the Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) Flight 8243.

While meeting the families of the crew members who lost their lives and the surviving flight attendants from the crash, President Ilham Aliyev said that the crash of the Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) plane, which was en route from Baku to Grozny route, could have been avoided.

“I can say with full certainty that the blame for the fact that Azerbaijani citizens died in this disaster lies with representatives of the Russian Federation. And we demand justice, we demand punishment of the guilty, we demand full transparency and human behavior,” said President Ilham Aliyev

“The black boxes are being decoded now, and I am sure that we will find out preliminary results in the near future and everything will fall into place. The whole picture of the tragedy will be clear. And this, of course, will be an important part of the full investigation of this tragedy and the punishment of those responsible for it,” added the Azerbaijani leader.

Kazakhstan has already sent the flight recorders from the Azerbaijani plane to the Brazilian Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (CENIPA) for decoding on December 30.

The Embraer 190AR was flying from Baku, Azerbaijan to Grozny, Russia. On 25 December, 2024 the plane was severely damaged by what is believed to be a Russian anti-aircraft missile during the aircraft's approach to Grozny.

The aircraft diverted to Kazakhstan and crashed while attempting an emergency landing near Aktau. Of the 67 people on board, 38 died in the accident, including both of the pilots and a flight attendant, while 29 people survived with injuries.

Aliyev added that Azerbaijan may agree to decode the data recorded by the Interstate Aviation Committee by the flight recorders of the aforesaid aircraft, if it is sure of their objectivity.

"We have been cooperating with this structure for decades, we have been cooperating with it quite actively. And this structure was essentially in charge of investigating airplane crashes in the former USSR," he said.

The president of Azerbaijan said that the information obtained from the black boxes was being deciphered in Brazil, which, according to him, will enable to recreate the complete picture of the tragedy that happened.

Without acknowledging the responsibility, Russia's President Vladimir Putin later apologized to the Azeri president over what he described as a tragic incident. Putin said the incident occurred when Russian air defence systems were repelling Ukrainian drones.
