Spanish airport operator Aena (AENA) has published the tender for the regeneration works of the pavement of runway 18R-36L of the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport for an amount of 39,768,485 euros and with an execution period of twelve months.

The work has a completion timeframe of twelve months. The project includes resurfacing the runway and its threshold, installing new conduit banks and laying new cabling, replacing halogen lights, and reinstalling existing LED lights, the company said in a statement.

Work will be carried out, including the regeneration of the pavement and the replacement of halogen lights, reinstallation of existing LED lights and the laying of new wiring on the taxiways Z1-Z14, associated with runway 18R-36L.

In addition, other actions will also be carried out, such as sealing cracks in the pavement and constructing fast access roads to runway 18R-36L.

The execution of these works, which will involve the closure of the runway for a period of 47 days next year, 2027, is being coordinated with airlines and all the agents involved in order to minimize the impact on airport operations.

To execute the plan, the development of the works has been programmed in detail and the flight planning has been adjusted so that airlines can adapt their schedules to the limitations imposed by these improvements.

The actions contemplated in this tender file are part of the ongoing improvement process of the airport's infrastructure, certified according to EU Regulation 139/2014, which sets technical and operational requirements for aerodromes.

In another development, Airport operator Aena has announced that it's going to make a record-breaking €12.9 bn (US$13.7 bn) investment to upgrade Spain’s airport infrastructure between 2027 and 2031.

As per the investment plan, Madrid-Barajas is expected to receive around €2.4 billion, while Alicante-Elche will see more than €1 billion invested in terminal enlargement and the building of a new taxiway.

For the tendered regeneration of the runway pavement is a routine maintenance of the infrastructure, with the last adaptation of the pavement of this 18R-36L runway having been carried out in 2015.
