Supernova Airlines, a subsidiary of the Nova Poshta Group, received the rights to operate the Lviv-Prague and Kyiv-Prague airlines with a frequency of 7 flights per week for regular international air transportation. The rights are granted from November 1, 2024 for an unlimited period.
This development marks the first time since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion that a civilian aircraft is being granted permission to operate in Ukrainian Airspace. Ukraine closed its entire airspace to all civil flights on February 24, 2022, due to the risk of becoming intentional or accidental military targets.
The permission was stated in the order of the State Aviation Service of Ukraine No. 789 dated October 21, 2024, With the rights being granted starting from November 1 2024 for an unlimited period.
According to the order, the Air Transportation Department was instructed to ensure that Supernova Airlines LLC was notified of the decision to issue rights to operate air lines and draw up relevant documents on the rights to operate air lines.
However, the permission for regular flights between Lviv, Kyiv and Prague for Supernova Airlines is "technical", flights can only begin after the opening of the skies over Ukraine, the Ukrainian publication hromadske clarifies with reference to "Nova Poshta".
Earlier, Supernova Airlines' own Boeing 737-800SF aircraft made its first flight on September 18, 2024, under the flag of Ukraine and with Ukrainian registration marks UR-NPA.
As explained in the company's press service, "receiving this permission means that we will be able to fly on the specified routes as soon as it becomes possible"
In addition, on October 17, Supernova Airlines received permission from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to fly in Europe, which is required for non-European airlines.
This means that the company will be able to operate commercial flights in the skies of the European Union. The company noted that it is currently at the final stage of preparation for flights within the EU.
Ukrainian President-Volodymyr Zelenskyy, compared the resumption of air traffic with shipping in the Black Sea, stressing that this is a "serious step".
The Office of the President said that Boryspil Airport could become the first civilian airport to be opened in Ukraine as soon as the security situation allows. But the Ministry of Infrastructure considers Lviv airport as the first to resume work in the presence of security guarantees.
Supernova Airlines is a newly established subsidiary of the NOVA group of companies, which aims to provide fast delivery of mail, e-commerce and cargo on trunk routes to and from Ukraine.
The airline received Ukrainian air operator certificate on January 6, 2023, which makes it possible to start cargo flights.
