Lufthansa Group Mulls Hiring Around 10,000 New Employees This Year, 360 For Brussels Airlines.

  • Lufthansa Group plans to add around 10,000 employees in a wide range of professions for the new year 2025.
  • The Lufthansa Group currently employs more than 100,000 people in over 90 countries.
  • Recruitment will focus large number of new recruitments required at Lufthansa Technik.
  • Lufthansa Airlines is continuing to concentrate on the Turnaround efficiency program and is focusing in particular on hiring in the operational area.
  • More than half of all recruitment is to take place in Germany.

On Wednesday, Germany's Lufthansa Group has made an announcement that it plans to recruit around 10,000 employees across the entire company in 2025.

The Group mulls to add "2,000 flight attendants, 1,400 employees for ground operations and about 1,300 technical experts," it said in the press rease, adding that 1,200 administrative workers and 800 new pilots were being sought as well.

However, the Group added that more than 50% of the new hires would be in Germany. Lufthansa itself will hire fewer people due to a cost-saving programme.

The press release read as,

"The Lufthansa Group has set itself the goal of recruiting around 10,000 colleagues in a wide range of professions for the new year 2025. More than 2,000 flight attendants, more than 1,400 ground staff for Ground Operations and around 1,300 technical experts are to be recruited across the Group."

"A total of around 1,200 employees are being sought for the administrative areas across the Group, as well as around 800 pilots. "

Subsidiaries Eurowings and Austrian Airlines will also be looking to add hundreds of new workers, the firm said. To be more specific, over 2,000 employees are to start at Lufthansa Technik. Austrian Airlines and Eurowings are each looking for around 700 employees.

For Belgium, half of the new hires at Brussels Airlines will be flight attendants. Brussels Airlines wants to add over 60 airport staff, 50 pilots, 45 maintenance staffs, and about 20 office employees, according to spokesperson Nico Cardone.

Michael Niggemann, Member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG and responsible for Human Resources & Legal Affairs:

“The Lufthansa Group is and remains an attractive employer with many different job profiles and career options. Last year alone, we received 350,000 applications across the Group and recruited over 13,000 employees. We look forward to welcoming every new colleague.”

Lufthansa noted, however, that it was still operating under its "Efficency Program Turnaround," and even if all of these positions were filled, it would still be hiring fewer new people than in 2024. In the last three years, the company brought on 30,000 new employees.

Year 2024 was not among the best for Lufthansa as it saw the company's finances affected by labor disputes, which cost Lufthansa Group around €450 million, amid increased competition and rising costs.

The move is surprising as Lufthansa Group's announcement of mass recruitment comes as major sectors in Germany plan thousands of layoffs, or threats of layoffs.

In another development, as reported by Germany's DPA news agency, Lufthansa Group is set to buy 41% of stake in Italian state-owned airline ITA Airways on January 13, for €325m. However, there is as yet no official confirmation from the German company or from the Italian government.

The deal has already been approved by the European Commission in November 2024. The Commission enclosed various preconditions as competition remedies, those included securing more routes for Lufthansa's peers.
