After receiving its air operator's certificate in September 2025, Sun PhuQuoc Airways Joins bigger competitors like Vietnam Airlines, Air India, Air Cambodia, and Ethiopian Airlines in a major Boeing Deal.
In a significant move that marks a new chapter in Vietnamese aviation, Sun PhuQuoc Airways has placed a landmark order for up to 40 Boeing 787‑9 Dreamliner jets.
This deal, valued at approximately $22.5 billion at list price, stands as the largest widebody order in Vietnam’s aviation history. The aircraft will shape the carrier’s long-haul fleet, connecting its hub at Phu Quoc International Airport to international destinations across Asia, Europe, North America, and Northeast Asia.
The Boeing deal is expected to reshape the future of air travel as Vietnamese travelers will have competitive options to choose. This deal not only boosts these airlines’ fleets but also enhances global connectivity and strengthens their presence in international markets.
“Our partnership with Boeing establishes a strong foundation for building a world-class airline that operates in sync with the tourism and resort ecosystem Sun Group has developed,” said Dang Minh Truong, chairman of Sun Group, the airline’s Vietnam-based parent company.
“We selected the Boeing 787-9 not only for its superior operational performance, but because it is the most suitable aircraft type to realize our vision of bringing Phu Quoc to the world and bringing the world to Phu Quoc.”
The Boeing order will enable Sun PhuQuoc Airways and its partners to offer more direct, long-haul routes, improving passenger experience and efficiency.
Vietnam's General Secretary To Lam and U.S. government representatives joined airline and Boeing leaders to recognize Sun PhuQuoc’s previously unidentified purchase, which is the largest Boeing widebody order in Vietnamese history.

The signing took place in the U.S. capital Washington, D.C., in the presence of Vietnam's Party General Secretary To Lam and his delegation during his trip to the country for the inaugural meeting of the Gaza Board of Peace.
The carrier is also planning to grow its overall fleet to about 100 aircraft by 2030, reinforcing its strategy to expand internationally while supporting Vietnam’s growing tourism industry.
The Boeing 787‑9 Dreamliner offers impressive operational advantages, including a range of over 7,500 nautical miles (13,900 km). This enables Sun PhuQuoc Airways to operate non-stop flights to major global cities, reducing journey times and enhancing direct connectivity.
In another development, Vietnam Airlines has finalized a deal for 50 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in February 2026, primarily consisting of the 737‑8 model. This marks a significant step in the airline’s regional and domestic expansion, aimed at bolstering its fleet to meet the growing demand for air travel within Southeast Asia. Delivery of these aircraft is expected between 2030 and 2032.
Vietnam Airlines is already operating 17 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, which will pair well with the new 737 MAX aircraft, enabling the airline to offer an integrated network of short- and long-haul services.
