Bangladeshi carrier Biman Bangladesh orders 14 planes from Boeing for fleet expansion.

  • Biman Bangladesh Airlines announced the purchase of 787 Dreamliner and 737 Max airplanes to expand and modernize its fleet.
  • Biman flies from the capital city of Dhaka to 22 international destinations in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Flag bearer Biman Bangladesh Airlines today signed a landmark agreement with US aerospace giant Boeing to acquire 14 aircraft, marking one of the largest fleet expansion moves in its history and boosting Bangladesh’s aviation growth ambitions.

The agreement was signed at a ceremony at Hotel InterContinental in the capital this evening, covering eight Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners, two Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and four Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft.

The new order comprises:

  • Eight 787-10s: Biman’s first order of the largest 787 variant will serve high-demand flights to the Middle East.
  • Two 787-9s: They will be used for long-haul service to Europe and North America.
  • Four 737-8s: The airline’s first 737 Max order is for flights from Bangladesh to destinations across the Middle East, India and Southeast Asia.

The Managing Director and CEO Kaizer Sohel Ahmed of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, signed the deal with Boeing Vice President Paul Righi.

"The new fuel-efficient, technologically advanced aircraft will modernize Biman's fleet, sharpen operational performance, and extend its international route network - strengthening Bangladesh's position in the global aviation market," said Kaizer Sohel Ahmed, Managing Director and CEO of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Rashiduzzaman Millat and Prime Minister’s Adviser M Humayun Kabir spoke at the event.

Biman Bangladesh Board Chairman Rumee A. Hossain and US Ambassador Brent T. Christensen also addressed the ceremony, highlighting the significance of the agreement for bilateral cooperation and aviation sector development.

Millat said that this is not only a purchase agreement between Biman and Boeing, it’s a strong partnership between Bangladesh and the USA.

“We are proud to build on our partnership with Biman with this order and support their strategy to modernize their fleet, expand their network and enhance the passenger experience,” Paul Righi, a Boeing vice president of sales, said in the release.

The Bangladeshi state minister and officials said the acquisition would modernise Biman Bangladesh’s ageing fleet, enhance fuel efficiency and significantly expand passenger and cargo capacity over the next decade.

The wide-body Dreamliners are expected to strengthen long-haul connectivity with Europe, the Middle East and Asia, while the narrow-body 737 MAX aircraft will boost regional operations.

The deal comes as Bangladesh prepares to operationalise the third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, seen as a key driver of future passenger growth.

The announcement comes a day after Peru-based Copa airlines said it would purchase 60 aircraft from Boeing. In January, Alaska Airlines announced the purchase of 105 new aircraft, while Delta is buying 60.

Biman currently operates a fleet of 14 Boeing airplanes - 787-9s, 787-8s, 777s and Next-Generation 737s - on its long-haul and short-haul international networks.
