A United Airlines gate agent at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) became involved in a heated confrontation with a passenger on Wednesday after appearing to threaten to call U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during an argument captured on video.
The footage, which has since gone viral on Reddit and other social media platforms, begins after the dispute had already escalated, leaving the events that prompted the confrontation unknown.
At the start of the video, the gate agent is heard telling the passenger,
"Maybe we should call ICE on you... because you don't act like a citizen, get away."
The comment quickly drew widespread attention online, with many viewers criticizing the exchange while others cautioned against drawing conclusions without seeing what occurred beforehand.
During the confrontation, the passenger records the interaction on his cellphone while the gate agent appears to film him using a company-issued smartphone. A second United Airlines employee attempts to defuse the situation, warning the passenger that police could be called if he did not calm down.
The warning appears to further escalate the dispute. The passenger responds by shouting,
"I dare you to call ICE on me."
The argument continues as the gate agent repeatedly tells the passenger to "get out my face." After asking her to repeat the statement, the passenger accuses the employee of racism, claims she will lose her job, and says he intends to sue her.
Because the video begins after the confrontation was already underway, it does not establish what triggered the exchange. As a result, it remains unclear whether either party's conduct before filming contributed to the escalation.
The incident has generated extensive discussion on social media, with users divided over the conduct of both the passenger and the airline employee. Some criticized the agent's apparent reference to ICE as inappropriate in a customer-service dispute, while others argued that the lack of context makes it difficult to fairly assess the interaction.
The viral video comes at a time when U.S. airlines are serving large numbers of international travelers during the FIFA World Cup, placing customer service under heightened public scrutiny. Incidents involving airline employees can spread rapidly online, shaping public perception regardless of the broader circumstances.
United Airlines has not publicly released additional details about the incident or disclosed whether it has opened an internal review. It is also unclear whether airport police or immigration authorities were ever contacted.
The episode underscores how partial recordings of public confrontations can quickly become the focus of online debate while leaving key questions unanswered about the events that preceded them.
