A milestone in Boeing 777-9 certification, FAA has authorized Boeing to proceed with Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) Phase 4B testing.

The Boeing 777-9 has reached a significant regulatory milestone for its certification. The FAA has authorized Boeing to proceed with Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) Phase 4B testing, a major component of the certification process required before the aircraft can enter commercial service.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Stephanie Pope confirmed that the aircraft secured Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) Phase 4B approval from the FAA.

This critical regulatory step shifts the aircraft into intense, hands-on evaluations directly involving FAA personnel, testing key systems like avionics, stability, and human factors.

As a Milestone, the TIA Phase 4B unlocks the largest remaining portion of certification flight testing. It follows the initial TIA Phase 4A approval granted in March 2026.

This phase focuses heavily on avionics and rigorous, real-world scenario testing, including pilot interactions, checklists, and non-normal operations.

While this critical phase is underway, extended ETOPS (Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards) testing is expected to push into 2027.

Lufthansa will be the launch customer of the new widebody, with orders for 20 777-9s and seven 777-8F freighters.

The Boeing 777X family consists of three primary variants: the 777-9, the 777-8, and a dedicated cargo model, the 777-8 Freighter (777-8F).

In another development, Michael Steen, CEO of Atlas Air Worldwide, said the company is considering ordering Boeing 777X freighters, despite having placed its first order for Airbus aircraft earlier this year.

In an interview, Steen stated,

“We already operate 777-200 freighters in our fleet, and we would like to acquire more. We are fully open to the 777X freighter.”
