Vietravel Airlines is preparing for a major expansion of its fleet and international network after exchanging a Letter of Intent with Airbus covering 50 next-generation aircraft, reinforcing the Vietnamese carrier’s ambitions to become a larger regional player.
The agreement was among a series of cooperation documents exchanged in Paris on September 10 and witnessed by Vietnamese General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and State President To Lam and French President Emmanuel Macron during To Lam’s official visit to France and participation in the Space Summit.
Under the Letter of Intent, Vietravel Airlines plans to acquire 20 Airbus A220 aircraft and 30 aircraft from the A321 family. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2029, according to Reuters and Vietnamese government reporting.
The agreement forms part of Vietravel Airlines’ medium- and long-term fleet strategy and is intended to provide the capacity needed for the carrier to significantly expand its network.
A strategic fleet expansion
The planned 50-aircraft fleet addition represents a substantial change in scale for Vietravel Airlines.
The A220 would give the carrier a new-generation narrowbody platform suited to regional and medium-haul markets, while the larger A321 family would provide additional capacity on high-demand domestic and international routes. The combination could give Vietravel Airlines greater flexibility as it develops a network extending beyond its current markets.
The airline plans to progressively broaden its international footprint beyond East and Southeast Asia, with longer-term ambitions to reach markets in South Asia, Central Asia, and selected destinations in the Middle East.
The 2029 delivery timeline also gives Vietravel Airlines a long-term fleet roadmap while the carrier continues to build capacity with aircraft entering service during the remainder of the decade.
Expansion is already under way
The Airbus agreement comes as Vietravel Airlines is already accelerating its fleet and network development.
The carrier is expanding its domestic network, connecting major economic and tourism centres across Vietnam. Its current international development includes scheduled services to Bangkok and Shenzhen, providing an initial platform for the broader international strategy.
Vietravel Airlines has also been adding Airbus A321s to its fleet. In June 2026, the airline took delivery of an A321, bringing the number of aircraft it owned to four and forming part of a plan to add seven more aircraft during the final six months of 2026.
The carrier is simultaneously adding domestic routes. Recent network filings included proposed daily services linking Ho Chi Minh City with Hai Phong and Thanh Hoa, illustrating the airline's continuing focus on strengthening its domestic footprint alongside international growth.
Vietravel Airlines expects the additional aircraft planned for the second half of 2026 to support an increase in operations to approximately 80–90 flights per day, while allowing the carrier to add further domestic and international destinations.
A new phase under T&T Group
The fleet expansion is also part of the broader transformation of Vietravel Airlines following the entry of T&T Group and affiliated entities as strategic shareholders in December 2024.
T&T Group, T&T Airlines, T&T SuperPort and BVIM Fund became strategic shareholders following a share-transfer agreement with Vietravel Group. The investment was presented as a platform for strengthening Vietravel Airlines’ competitiveness, expanding its route network and developing the carrier's long-term aviation strategy.
T&T Group has subsequently described Vietravel Airlines as an important component of its wider aviation, logistics and infrastructure ecosystem. The group has said the airline is targeting a fleet of 30–50 aircraft by 2030, while developing a more professional and sustainable operating model.
The carrier's 2025 capital increase plans were likewise aimed at strengthening its financial capacity to support fleet growth, infrastructure investment, technology and workforce development.
Part of a broader Vietnam-France aviation package
The Vietravel Airlines agreement was exchanged alongside other major aviation-related documents during the Vietnam-France meetings.
Vietnam Airlines and Airbus signed a Memorandum of Understanding covering the purchase of five A350-900 aircraft, with deliveries scheduled for 2033 and 2034. Vietnam Airlines has identified the acquisition of additional widebody aircraft beyond 2030 as a strategic priority as it prepares for further international growth.
Meanwhile, Vietjet Air signed a contract covering maintenance, repair and technical support services for its Airbus A320 and A330 fleets.
Taken together, the agreements underline the increasingly important role of Airbus and French aerospace expertise in Vietnam's aviation development, spanning aircraft acquisition, fleet modernization and aftermarket support.
For Vietravel Airlines, however, the 50-aircraft Airbus Letter of Intent stands out as a defining milestone.
If realized as planned, the programme would give the airline the fleet foundation to move beyond its current role as a growing Vietnamese domestic and regional carrier and pursue a much broader international network.
With near-term fleet additions supporting growth in 2026 and the Airbus aircraft beginning to arrive from 2029, Vietravel Airlines is effectively pursuing a two-stage expansion: build capacity now, then use a substantially larger next-generation fleet to reach new markets across Asia and beyond.
