US Senators support the bill that Aims Taiwan’s enhanced participation in UN civil aviation body !

'Sustainable aviation' is the call and inclusion of Taiwan in ICAO is the Aim ! United States Senators Ted Cruz and Jeff Merkley are co-sponsoring bipartisan legislation they say will improve global aviation safety . The bill, which was introduced on Thursday, aims to help efforts to include Taiwan in the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

ICAO is a United Nations body responsible for regulation of civilian aviation in the contracting states . Due to pressure from China - a member country , Taiwan has not been invited to participate in ICAO proceedings since 2013 . It has also been excluded from the ongoing 41st ICAO Assembly taking place in Montreal.

The efforts of inclusion of Taiwan have taken a momentum after Flight and supply chain disruptions were observed due to China's  series of live-fire military drills in six maritime areas near Taiwan from August 4th to 7th.

The new US bill, called Ensuring Taiwan Aviation and Safety Act of 2022, tasks the US Secretary of State with regularly submitting a report to Congress on measures taken to ensure Taiwan’s integration in the UN’s civil aviation agency. It follows an earlier call from Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg for Taiwan “to participate meaningfully in ICAO’s work.”

More countries ,which includes Australia , Japan , Germany , France and Newzealand have spoken up in favor of Taiwan's inclusion in the ICAO. Even Somalia has come forward in support of the Movement.

In response , Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement of support on Friday that stressed the need for inclusive aviation. It says that China's large-scale military exercises around Taiwan last month “gravely affected international air traffic.”
