The National Office of Airports (ONDA) has launched an international expression of interest (RFI) for the largest expansion project in the history of Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca, in an ambitious move aimed at transforming it into one of the most important air hubs in Africa and the world.
With an investment of AED 15 billion (~US$ 1.5 billion), the project will increase the airport's capacity to 20 million passengers per year, with state-of-the-art infrastructure that meets the highest international standards.
The H-shaped terminal will comply with international hub standards, particularly in terms of connection times, baggage handling, and utilization rates of boarding bridges. It will also address anticipated air traffic growth needs, especially those linked to Royal Air Maroc’s development program.
Connectivity will be a key feature of the new terminal, with direct access to the Kenitra-Marrakech high-speed rail line (LGV), offering travelers quick and smooth connections to major Moroccan cities.
Following the model of major international airports such as Paris-Charles de Gaulle, London-Heathrow, and Hong Kong International, this modern infrastructure aims to strengthen transportation intermodality and enhance passenger experience.
The New passenger terminal with 450,000 square meters will be three times larger than the current facility, designed with smart technologies to ensure smooth mobility and reduce waiting times.
It'll include luxury travel lounges, advanced shopping and entertainment areas, and spaces dedicated to international companies.
A new parallel runway will be built 3,700 meters long and 45 meters wide, that'll allow landing of the wide body passenger aircraft such as the Airbus A380 and Boeing 777X with an increased number of flights to 60 movements per hour.
While additional parking bays will accommodate more than 100 aircraft at a time, a 42-meter-high air traffic control tower, will be equipped with the latest safe navigation systems.
The new Terminal will be connected to the Kenitra-Marrakech line, ensuring Fast links between the airport and major cities (Casablanca, Rabat, Kenitra, Marrakech).
Once completed, the new infrastructure will not only support tourism and investment, especially with the increasing demand for international flights, it will create thousands of jobs during the construction and operation phase.
With Morocco (in partnership with Spain and Portugal) hosting the 2030 World Cup, the airport will be ready to welcome millions of fans as it's scheduled for completion before the end of 2029.
The expansion project of Mohammed V Airport is not just an infrastructure modernization, but a strong declaration of Morocco's position as a leading logistical, tourist and economic destination.
