Southampton Airport runway extension is going to be reality - Approval granted after another marathon Debate !

The Debate - To allow or Not  to !

More than 200 people had registered to speak online at the meeting of the Controversial plans to extend the runway at Southampton Airport .

Councillors spent hours listening to them  and  watching sent pre-recorded videos, infact debate continued for around 19 hours compared to last time's 14 hours !

Scope of  the expansion !

164m (538ft) extension to the Runway has been proposed by the airport authority.

The plan also includes 600 extra parking spaces in the long-stay car park and a blast screen built to the north of the proposed runway extension.

The Extension Pro team :

The airport authorities see its survival by extending the runway to accommodate narrow body aircrafts such as the Airbus A320 & Boeing B737.

The pro team believes that the expansion would create more than 1,000 jobs, boost the local economy and result in a £15m investment.

The Extension opposition - The Fight to deny the extension will remain on !

The campaigners have described it as a "bleak day" and have vowed to fight on.

There were concerns of number of people affected by airport noise would go up from 11,450 in 2020 to 46,050 in 2033 during the meeting.

"Today's decision is by no means the end of the matter. It is completely wrong, not only in principle but also in the way it was reached.

"We shall be taking advice as to our options for future action."

The  Voting and  Decision !

While local area committee rejected the plan, the decision was made by the full council of  Eastleigh Borough Council  to allow the extension.

Twenty-two councillors voted in favour, with 13 against and one abstention. Hundreds of people watched the debate, which was held online because of coronavirus restrictions.

The Arguement !

Airport authority argued the runway extension was "vital" for the site's survival but campaigners and some local authorities raised objections over noise and pollution.

But officers said the impacts would be mitigated by the installation of sound insulation and a limit of three million passengers a year.

Broadcaster and naturalist Chris Packham was among those opposed to the plans.

The expansion was officially proposed in the year 2019 and since then there had been four public consultations on the fate of the project.
