Allure of Gold has found involvement of Airline and Airport staffs in smuggling efforts from time to time across the globe, and this time the allure found some favourites in New Delhi Airport (IATA: DEL, ICAO: VIDP) of India.
On 21st July , the Customs Department of New Delhi Airport carried out a 24 hours operation to Bust a racket involving Aviation professionals , that smuggled gold from Middle east.
Delhi Customs took it to the twitter Today and shared it success in doing so , it said , Seven persons, that included four employees of Indigo and Spicejet airlines, were arrested by the customs officials at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport, here for allegedly smuggling into the country gold worth Rs 72.46 lakh (approx. 96,800USD).
Reportedly, Three passengers out of which two were caught with Gold possessions and one with follow up act with the airline employees, were intercepted by the customs officials after their arrival from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday, it said.

Further Investigation and search work on two passengers resulted in the recovery of two gold bar pieces and one gold biscuit collectively weighing 517.2 grams and valued at Rs 22.89 lakh, the statement issued by the customs department said. One of the passengers has admitted to have handed over 160 grams of gold to Indigo airline staff, it said.
Indian Newspaper News18 sources say , After a thorough interrogation, three members of a syndicate of Indigo airline and one member of Spicejet have confessed to have smuggled the gold at current instance and they have also admitted their involvement in smuggling of 960 grams gold previously as well.
The total value of the smuggled goods including previously smuggled gold comes to Rs 72.46 lakh, it added. All the seven accused that includes three passengers along with four syndicate members have been arrested.
