Passenger boarding and disembarking operations at Salgado Filho International Airport in Porto Alegre will resume on July 15. The information was released this Monday by Fraport Brasil , the company responsible for managing the airport.
At the moment, boarding and disembarking services are carried out at the ParkShopping Canoas Terminal , in the metropolitan region. Flights will continue to be operated by the Canoas Air Base , until the runway for landings and takeoffs is cleared.
Canoas Air Base is one of the 9 airfields chosen by the Federal Government to absorb part of the air network operated at Salgado Filho International Airport, in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, closed for an indefinite period due to the floods that affected the state.
Fabricio Cardoso, operations director at Fraport said :
“The important thing is to maintain the routine that was adopted at the shopping mall, arriving three hours before the flight, remembering that all traffic will always occur here at the airport. There is no way to serve any passengers in the Canoas air base area.”
Before the scheduled date for the reopening of Salgado Filho Airport, Fraport Brasil has released images of the infrastructure that has undegone deep cleaning after the complete premises was affected by the historic May floods.
With construction work underway, passenger access will be via gates 5 and 6. The check-in process and baggage check-in will be carried out in the international boarding area, as will the entire security process, such as X-rays and document checking.
After these steps, passengers will travel by bus to Canoas Air Base to board. Those disembarking will be transported to Salgado Filho Airport to collect their luggage. The entire process will be monitored by concessionaire teams.
Simulations have been carried out with buses from the airport to the Air Base (and vice versa) at alternating times, and no significant changes in the timetable were observed. Despite the greater distance, the average time remained the same as the operation currently carried out at the shopping mall.
The terminal will be open from 6am to 9pm , and it is recommended that you arrive three hours before your flight. Boarding will close 1.5 hours before your flight , after which you will not be allowed to enter the boarding lounge.
