Nicaragua will open one of the most modern airports in the Central American region, through the project of “Reconstruction, Expansion and Improvement of the Punta Huete International Airport”, in Managua, the capital.
The Punta Huete International Airport, located 58 kilometers northeast of Managua, will be ready in the next four years
This airport promises to be the most modern in Central America, with the capacity to handle wide body aircraft such as Boeing 747s or Russian AN-124 freighters.
In the center of the Americas, Nicaragua is making history by starting construction of the Punta Huete International Airport, which will be the most modern airfield in Central America with the longest category 4F runway.
The airport will handle 35,000 flights annually, handling some 3.5 million passengers. It will have a runway measuring 3,600 meters long and 60 meters wide.
The investment for this mega-project is 430 million dollars, financed by the People's Republic of China, within the framework of Nicaragua's incorporation two years ago in the Belt and Road Initiative and the signing of the Free Trade Agreement with the Asian giant.
The project is being done in coordination with the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (MTI) of Nicaragua, it is estimated that the construction will last 48 months and 800 workers will be involved in the construction of the air terminal.
The Chinese company CAMC Engineering Co., Ltd (CAMCE) will be in charge of this project in Punta Huete, which was the largest military base in the Central American country during the first Sandinista government (1979-1990).
It's to be mentioned that on February 9, 2024, the National Assembly of Nicaragua approved two credit agreements: the Decree Approving the Credit Facility Agreement and the Credit Facility Agreement signed between Nicaragua, represented by the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit and the Chinese company CAMC Engineering Co. Ltd (CAMCE) for an amount of 2 billion 874 million 652 thousand 142.91 yuan, which are intended to finance the project of "Reconstruction, Expansion and Modernization of the Punta Huete International Airport".
