At around 5:30 p.m. on the 16th, a Korean Air Lines from New Chitose, Hokkaido, was moving off the tarmac for takeoff when it collided with a Cathay Pacific aircraft from Hong Kong that was parked next to it.
According to the Hokkaido Police Department and the Chitose City Fire Department, there were no injuries so far , and there was no fire or fuel leak.
According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the Korean plane was an Airbus A330-300 bound for Seoul, with a total of 289 passengers and crew on board.
The Cathay plane was a Boeing 777-300 bound for Hong Kong and was unmanned. The Korean plane was in the middle of a ``pushback,'' in which a vehicle was used to push it to the taxiway before takeoff. The Korean plane suffered damage to the left wing tip, and the Cathay plane suffered damage near the right tail.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism will request a report from the operator regarding the situation at the time.
The Korean plane was scheduled to depart at 2 p.m., but due to snow, departure was delayed by three and a half hours. The Cathay flight was also scheduled to depart at 5:10 p.m., but was delayed. Korean Air said it plans to bring a replacement plane from Seoul.
Korean Air released a statement saying,
A Korean Air aircraft came into contact with a Cathay aircraft during pushback at New Chitose Airport. There were no injuries and the airline is cooperating with all relevant authorities.
