India is now at the 48th position in ICAO Aviation Safety Rankings , a "Significant Jump" from the 102nd rank it had in 2018 .

India has been ranked among the top 50 countries of the world in terms of comprehensive safety audits conducted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and the development will help domestic airlines in international expansion as per the Director General of Civil Aviation , the Civil Aviation Regulator of india.

In the Safety rankings by the United Nations wing — International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) , India is now at the 48th position , a "quantum leap" from the previous 102nd rank , it had received in 2018.

Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) said the ICAO has given the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) the highest Effective Implementation (EI) score of 85.49 per cent.

"India is now among the top 50 countries with best aviation safety according to the latest @icao rankings. This major break through will also help Indian airlines to expand internationally," it said.

Indian Aviation minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia took it to the Social media as well saying .

Congratulations to all the stakeholders for this incredible feat! With tighter oversight & improved standards, Indian aviation is leaving no stone unturned to ensure passenger safety & security. Big ups @DGCAIndia @MoCA_GoI !

The rankings are for 187 countries , those are contracting states and assessments are normally done at different points of time to assess the safety oversight of the contracting states.

DGCA chief Arun Kumar says,

"A robust safety oversight system certified and acknowledged by the experts is sine qua non for flight safety and very assuring for the flying public.  The DGCA team has worked tirelessly to strengthen aviation safety.  Now , we are on a peak and so the challenge is to maintain and improve further" .

Under the International Civil Aviation Organisation, Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme (USOAP) Continuous Monitoring Approach, an ICAO Coordinated Validation Mission (ICVM) was undertaken from November 9-16, 2022.

The results of USOAP activities allow ICAO to evaluate a State's ability to provide safety oversight by determining whether the State has effectively and consistently implemented the eight critical elements (CEs) of a safety oversight system , which enable the State to ensure the implementation of ICAO's safety-related Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs), as well as associated procedures and guidance material.

The eight critical elements (CEs) are :

  • CE-1: Aviation Security Legislation.
  • CE-2: Aviation Security Programmes and Regulations.
  • CE-3: State Appropriate Authority for Aviation Security and its Responsibilities.
  • CE-4: Personnel Qualifications and Training.
  • CE-5: Provision of Technical Guidance, Tools and Security Critical Information.
  • CE-6: Certification and Approval Obligations.
  • CE-7: Quality Control Obligations.
  • CE-8: Resolution of Security Concerns.

Now , With the score of 85.49 per cent each , India stands with Georgia at the 48th position. India has performed better than neighbouring countries China and Pakistan, those stand in 49th rank and 100th rank respectively. Israel has been ranked 50th in the list.

If the complete list is checked , Singapore tops the list with a whopping 99.69 per cent followed by the UAE at the second position with a score of 98.8 per cent and the Republic of Korea is at the third place (98.24 per cent).
