ENAIRE completes the implementation of new air navigation procedures in Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport.

ENAIRE has completed the implementation of a new approach process at Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP/LEMG) to improve its operability.

ENAIRE said, the project involves a transition phase, which allows the implementation to be gradually accommodated by all the actors involved in its operation, i.e. air traffic control units, airlines, pilots, aeronautical database providers, etc.

The RNAV1 navigation accuracy that has been used in the design is in advance compliant with European Regulation 2018/1048, which applies to both arrival and departure routes and approaches, whose application deadline is 2030.

MIDAS, which uses the AMAN arrivals manager, provides assistance for sequencing and ordering aircraft.

With the new airspace procedures of the MIDAS project, ENAIRE is helping to make the approach to Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport among the most modern in the world, resulting in an environmental improvement in emissions, maintaining the acoustic footprint and facilitating the work of pilots and air traffic controllers through greater standardisation and predictability of manoeuvres.

ENAIRE is the leading provider of air navigation and aeronautical information services in Spain, the fourth largest in Europe in terms of traffic volume and one of the most important worldwide.

Approach of an aircraft to Malaga

The approach service, which ENAIRE provides from Malaga, manages the arrival and departure trajectories from the moment the aircraft move away from the view of the Control Tower and reach an altitude of approximately 4 kilometres.

The current airspace design is based on conventional navigation concepts, which are mainly based on radio aids and vector guidance by ENAIRE's air traffic controllers who manage the approach to Malaga.

With the current growth in the number of passengers using Malaga Airport as an entry and exit gateway, there are times of strong concentration of operations.

From November 2, 2023, the improved procedures of Malaga are now available.
