Dubai International Airport (DXB) to temporarily reduce the capacity ! The airport will close one of its Northern Runway (12L/30L) for 45 days from May 9th to June 22nd for the upgrade work (NRR).
• Southern runway was rehabilitated in 2019 and the Northern runway was last rehabilitated in 2014
• An opportunity to undertake the Northern Runway Rehabilitation ahead of the end of life date (2024/25)
• Slower than expected recovery and Benefit of minimising longer term traffic loss
• Mitigation of significant future works until after 2030
As per the plan , Some flights will be redirected to Dubai World Central - Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) , the emirate's second airport , to limit the impact on service during the closure period.
Though , the Northern Runway was not due for rehabilitation untill 2024 - 2025 , slow air traffic recovery has prompted the Authorities to utilize the opportunity for future peak seasons .
-Resurfacing of Northern Runway,
-strengthening of the wider Runway strip,
- aeronautical ground lighting (AGL) replacement,
-taxiway guidance signs (TGS) replacement,
-Pavement reinforcement of key taxiway entry and exits,
-Repair of drainage infrastructure, and
-the relocation of navigation aids substation.
• Full time closure of the Northern runway commences at 15:00 hours local (11:00 UTC).
• Single runway operations will continue using the Southern runway.
• Regular maintenance on the Southern runway will thereafter be conducted every Sunday during the closure period between 16:00 hours and 18:00 hours local (12:00 to 14:00 UTC).
• Northern runway handed back to ATC at 18:00 hours local (14:00 UTC).
• Dual runway operations will resume and the runway maintenance period will switch back to the current regime between 15:00 hours and 18:00 hours local (11:00 to 14:00 UTC).
Operator Dubai Airports Statement ,
"While regular runway maintenance is scheduled on a weekly basis, more extensive upgrades such as the one planned require a complete closure of the runway,"
