The Director General of Israel’s Ministry of Defense, Major General (Ret.) Amir Eshel, who is on a working visit to the US, visited the Lockheed Martin-Sikorsky factories in Stratford, Connecticut on Monday and toured the production line of the CH-53K helicopter that Israel is procuring.

The Sikorsky CH-53K King Stallion (Sikorsky S-95) with three uprated 7,500 shp (5,590 kW) engines , that was first put into service this  April , is a heavy-lift cargo helicopter designed and produced by Sikorsky Aircraft.

So far, the Ministry of Defense of Israel has purchased 12 helicopters for the Israel Air Force which will replace the old CH-53D “Yasur” attack helicopters currently in use.

Valued at about $2 billion, the U.S. and Israel had signed a letter on Dec. 30 2021 achieving the deal for the Israeli Air Force to buy the CH-53K King Stallion helicopters, after a multi-year negotiation process.

As per the NAVAIR release, The signed agreement states first deliveries of the aircraft are planned for 2025. In addition to the aircraft, the agreement includes T408-GE-400 engines; facilities study, design and construction; spare and repair parts; support and test equipment; publications and technical documentation; aircrew and maintenance training; U.S. government and contractor engineering, technical and logistics support services; and other related elements of logistics and program support.

According to Lockheed Martin, the CH-53K King Stallion advances Sikorsky’s 50 years of manufacturing and operational success with its CH-53A, CH-53D/G, and CH-53E predecessors.

Built to thrive on the modern battlefield, including shipboard operations, Lockheed boasts that the CH-53K aircraft is designed to be intelligent, reliable, low maintenance and survivable in the most austere and remote forward operating bases.

The CH-53K helicopter has been designed and built to the exacting standards of the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) , that has a procurement objective is 200 helicopters and will serve as its critical land and sea based logistics connector.

The new heavy lifter will allow the U.S. Marine Corps and international militaries to move troops and equipment from ship to shore, and to higher altitude terrain, more quickly and effectively than ever before.
