Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME)

An Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME), also Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (LAME or L-AME), is a licensed person who carries out and certifies aircraft maintenance. The license is widespread internationally and is recognised by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)

Aircraft Engineer is also called as Aircraft maintenance engineer ( Not to be confused with Aerospace Engineer or Aeronautical engineer.)
Usually referred As LAE ( Licensed Aircraft Engineer). While in Europe they are called Certifying Aircraft Technicians. While In united States they are called as an Aircraft mechanic or A&P mechanics.
In some countries a graduate of AME are reffered as Engineer where as certifying Engineer will be licensed Aircraft Engineer.
Aircraft Engineering involves in Maintenance and servicing of All parts of an Aircrafts after aircraft is under the control of an airline or operator.

How to Become an aircraft maintenance engineer ?
Aircraft maintenance engineers come under the regulation of Country or Union’s Civil Aviation authority , just as Pilots do. They maintain the airworthiness of the aircraft & certify it / it’s components stating that , the aircraft is fit for flying .
Again,to upkeep the airworthiness and maintain the highest safety standards ,personnel working within the aviation industry must be licensed. Engineers must be trained & licensed to maintain aircraft and then release those aircraft into service.
Aspiring students of aircraft maintenance engineering must undertake approved professional training to gain appropriate qualifications and certification.
Aircrafts compile a bunch of complex systems & components . Maintaining them requires years of qualification, experience & rating in the respective sub-fields. Choosing the appropriate stream & getting the type rating is key, as you desire Aircraft Engineering as your career.

Qualifications for Aircraft Engineering
Basic qualification : 12th standard ( Science stream ) / 10+2 standard ( Science) .
Aircraft Engineer & Mechanic Licence Glossary
This section establishes the requirements for the issue of an aircraft maintenance license and conditions of its validity and use, for aeroplanes and helicopters of the following categories:

  1. Category A: Aircraft Mechanic for simple defect rectification.
  1. Category B1: Aircraft Engineer on powerplant and mechanical and electrical systems.
  1. Category B2: Aircraft Engineer on avionic and electrical systems.
  1. Category B3: Aircraft Engineer on piston-engine non-pressurised aeroplanes of 2 000 kg MTOM and below.
  2.
  3. Category C: Aircraft Engineer / Maintenance Controller/Base maintenance CRS.

Categories A and B1 are subdivided into subcategories relative to combinations of aeroplanes, helicopters, turbine and piston engines.

The subcategories are:

  1. A1 and B1.1 Aeroplanes Turbine
  1. A2 and B1.2 Aeroplanes Piston
  1. A3 and B1.3 Helicopters Turbine
  1. A4 and B1.4 Helicopters Piston
