The Govt of Telangana,india had sought the exemption from UAS Rules, 2021 for the delivery of vaccines on 9th March 2021, and indian civil aviation ministry accepted it on 26th April .
Indian civil aviation ministry statement says,
MoCA gives conditional exemption from Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Rules, 2021 to Govt of Telangana for conducting experimental delivery of vaccines using drones within Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) range.
However , the ministry's statement does not categorically specify the vaccine types and other storage details for vaccine, that will be part of this experimental delivery.
This exemption will be valid for a period of one year or until further orders, it further added.
Earlier on April 22nd, the ministry had permitted the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to conduct a feasibility study on using drones to deliver Covid-19 vaccine.
India is going through severe crisis , as it struggles with the second wave of the covid19 infections as healthcare system is reeling under a shortage of medical grade oxygen and beds.
