On thursday, Boeing said that , it will provide Safety management system (SMS) trainings to indian aviation agencies and other aviation business entities in collaboration with the University of Southern California (USC) and the Indian Aviation Academy (IAA).
Safety Management System SMS is a requirement of International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) that every Commercial aircraft operator, airport, and air traffic services must comply to provide aviation services.

Annex 19 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation, Safety Management, contains safety management standards. These standards include requirements for SSP, applicable to Member States as regulators, and SMS, applicable to product/service provider organizations. As a member of ICAO, the United States (U.S.) has committed to comply with ICAO safety management standards.
SMS is the formal, top-down, organization-wide approach to managing safety risk and assuring the effectiveness of safety risk controls. It includes systematic procedures, practices, and policies for the management of safety risk.
SMS is considered a best practice to provide a framework for hazard identification, risk mitigation, and promotion of a positive safety culture, as per Boeing.
The DGCA-India had issued a CAR on SMS in July 2010, FAA also Establishes the Safety Management System (SMS) policy and requirements for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) through its order 8000.369C.
To achieve the highest levels of safety and quality with its products and services, Boeing is adopting the principles and practices as it implements an enterprise SMS .
''As part of our continued commitment to safety, we are collaborating with India's civil aviation stakeholders to promote a collaborative safety culture. We have partnered with IAA and USC to introduce the Safety Management System (SMS) program to India,'' Salil Gupte, President of Boeing -India , said.
''The introduction of SMS is the most significant development of aviation safety of the decade. It applies to all major operational aviation entities and draws upon the power of communication and data to identify potentially hazardous situations,'' Thomas R Anthony, Director of USC's Aviation Safety and Security Programme, said.
The USC-IAA program for India's civil aviation authorities focuses on modern safety management and safety assurance concepts such as risk management, root cause analysis, audits, data collection, and incident investigations to further enhance the safety, efficiency, and reliability of the country's aviation ecosystem.
With SMS, the regulators will ensure that regulations are in place to control safety risk. The regulator will use available data to monitor the level of safety risk that exists in the scope of regulatory authority and ensure that safety risk is controlled.
IAA was set up in 2010 as a collaboration among Airports Authority of India (AAI), Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
